The Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) is an annual collegiate event that brings together winning teams from 19 regional competitions across North America to compete for the national title. Teams are challenged to design, fabricate, and construct a scale-model steel bridge through a timed assembly, followed by load testing and weighing. Each bridge must span approximately 20 feet, support 2,500 pounds, meet competition specifications, and is also evaluated on aesthetics.
The competition’s mission is to extend students’ classroom knowledge into a practical, hands-on steel design project that develops professional and interpersonal skills, encourages innovation, and fosters meaningful relationships between students and industry professionals. This year’s National Finals will be hosted by The University of Texas at El Paso.
